How Do I Choose a Career After 12th Grade?

Aditi Singh

Now that the class 12th results have been released and school has ended, it is time to make the all-important decision on what to do next. With so many possibilities accessible today, deciding on a professional path can be challenging. It may even appear intimidating and overpowering. Despite the finest counsel from friends and family, you may be riddled with uncertainties and question if what you are doing is correct.

If you've already decided on a professional path, you're probably studying for admission tests or filling out college applications. However, if you are among the rare few who are unsure what to do next, continue reading:

Understand your passions:

Because the decision to pursue a job after high school is so significant, you will receive a lot of advice from family and friends. However, it is critical that you select a path that corresponds to your interests and abilities. If you want to be an engineer, doctor, or business professional, you should take a course in the same field. However, if you are a bird with varied coloured feathers and want to pursue a career in music or the arts, or if you want to become an actor, you should choose a course that is related to your artistic endeavours or a stream that allows you to pursue them.

Select the appropriate course:

There are several courses available these days that can be taken to suit one's job path. You can pursue a degree, a certificate, a weekday course, a weekend course, or even remote learning/part-time study. Understand the course specifics - curriculum and teaching methods - thoroughly before making a selection. Reach out to graduates or seniors who are currently studying there to get a sense of what it's like.

Understand your options for the future:

Now that you know what your interests are and how you might train yourself to pursue those interests, it's time to assess the long-term possibilities of the career path you've selected. While pursuing your passions should be the major incentive, the financial sustainability of the professional route should also be considered.

If the preceding stages do not provide you with clarity on the course you should pursue, try the opposite technique. Visualize yourself professionally a few years in the future while using this strategy. Once you've determined your objective, work backwards to determine the credentials that will assist you in achieving it. For example, if you want to be a pilot, plan backwards and identify the stream/course that best meets your professional requirements. As a result, select the path that will assist you in achieving that goal.

Don't worry if you're still unsure about which option to choose. Choose a degree in a field that interests you and keep researching. Participate in campus activities and socialise with individuals from various professions. Do your best where you are, and you will ultimately find your path.
